UPI credit cards explained: should you get one?
You can now link a RuPay credit card to UPI and pay by scanning the same QR codes you already use. That blends the convenience of UPI with the rewards and short-term credit of a card. Here's how it works and whether it's right for you.
How it works
Only RuPay network credit cards can be linked to UPI apps today. Once linked, your scan-and-pay transaction is funded by your credit card instead of your bank balance — so you can earn rewards and pay later, while the merchant simply receives a normal UPI payment.
The benefits
- Rewards on everyday spends: Even small QR payments can earn cashback or points.
- Accepted everywhere UPI is: No need for a card machine at the shop.
- Interest-free period: You still get the card's billing cycle to repay.
The limits to know
- Person-to-person (P2P) transfers usually aren't allowed — it's for merchant payments.
- Rewards rates on UPI spends can be lower than on regular card swipes.
- It's still credit — pay the full bill on time to avoid interest.
A good option to start with
The slice UPI Credit Card is lifetime-free, built UPI-first, and gives up to 3% cashback on all spends — even small ones — with zero forex markup. It's a low-risk way to try a UPI credit card.
UPI-on-credit rules and reward rates are evolving. Confirm current terms with the card issuer before relying on specific benefits.
